From Sinner to Saint: The Spiritual Odyssey of St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo
St Augustine tells us that in the year 371 AD at the age of 17 he left his home in the small north African town of Thagaste bound for the big city of Carthage to pursue an education in rhetoric and oratory as preparation, at least in the eyes of his father, for a career in law or politics. While not quite on the level of Sodom and Gomorrah, Carthage was filled with opportunities for the young Augustine to lose himself in sensuality and emotion, and he did so with the enthusiasm of an addict on a binge. That he would one day go from that to become, in the opinion of both Catholics and Protestants, perhaps the greatest theologian in the history of Christianity is beyond remarklable. In four successive Wednesday evening presentations, Dr. Jim Freeman will guide us through the major stages of Augustine’s journey in his quest to fulfill the ultimate longing of his soul.
